Lawrence Lady Boss | KAYLA KOHN

 LADY BOSS PROFILE

Meet Kayla Kohn, the woman behind the camera at Kayla Kohn - Lawrence, Kansas Newborn & Family Photographer. Kayla specializes in photographing newborns and families. She photographs newborns on location, in families homes and in their hospital rooms shortly after delivery, and family portraits in the warmer months of the year outdoors. Kayla offers high quality photography for an affordable price! "My main motivation with my business is to offer families beautiful portrait sessions that they can cherish and afford. I want yearly family photos to be a thing for each one of my clients!” Kayla also offers a styling service and often has an assistant at her sessions as well. Kayla has been photographing full-time for three years now and was voted 3rd in Best of Lawrence 2020.

What is your goal for the next year?

Lose weight. Haha! Just kidding (but not really) — My goal for this year with my business is to photograph a ridiculously insane amount of sessions.

Who has influenced you the most?

Elena S Blair is a semi-famous photographer who really sets the standard for me in how I have structured my business.

What one piece of advice do you give to other business owners?

It’s a pretty proven thing that it takes 5 years for your business to either be profitable or for it to be on solid ground and finally feel like it’s legit. Year one is not going to look or feel like year two. Year two is not going to be anything like year three…etc. You aren’t at your goal now, nor will you ever be, because as soon as you semi-attain that “goal” it will be just a stepping stone to the next.
Think of your business as a never ending mountain to climb : )

So just like in life, your business is not a destination, it’s a journey. And it sounds 100% stupid to say and hear — but it is 100% true.

When you are not working, what are you doing?

I am probably feeding my newborn. I just delivered my third daughter via my third c-section in November 2020 and it has thrown me for a loop emotionally and physically. It’s been a process and I could write a lot more on that — But when I’m not doing that, I am caring for all my girls and supporting my husband who works three jobs including being in the Kansas Air Guard and a firefighter and is finishing his MBA in May of this year.

What Lawrence hidden gem do you recommend everyone checks out?

My favorite places in Lawrence are Java Break, Eccentricity, 715 and KB&Co.

If you could change one thing about your business, what would you change?

I would change where I live so that I was more in the location of my business. It’s a blessing and a curse to live on 40 acres far away from where you work.
